Historian and author Felix Bohr recently visited the Suhrkamp offices to talk about his new book Before the Downfall: Hitler’s Years in the »Wolf’s Lair«. While most people have heard of the »Wolf's Lair« and some know that it was the location of Stauffenberg's failed assassination attempt on Hitler in July of 1944, few people have a sense of what everyday life was like inside the complex, and how its architectural, environmental, and spatial qualities influenced Hitler's deteriorating mental and physical constitution, and consequently, the course of the Second World War and the Holocaust. Before the Downfall draws on extrensive eye-witness testimony and secondary sources to paint this neglected but crucial historical site in an entirely new light.
