A catalogue of female strength in times of crisis and hardship
The current world order has grown fragile: future economic development is uncertain, peace in Europe is under threat, and social cohesion is under immense strain. Many people are worried and looking for guidance. But it is precisely in times of crisis that it is worth looking back – for example, at women who found ways out of hardship, war, and poverty 100 years ago, or who found ways of living with them.

This book shows how, in the first half of the 20th century, women in Germany, England, France, and the US managed to overcome historical crises with courage, pragmatism, and creativity. From nurses in the First World War to politicians in the Weimar Republic or women working at home, on the farm, or helping to rebuild their country after the ravages of war, they are all role models, whose attitudes and actions can still inspire us today.
Alongside well-known figures such as Marie Curie and Eleanor Roosevelt, the book looks at forgotten heroines – nurses, social workers, businesswomen, and cultural figures, and above all, at the women who keep families together.
Lavishly illustrated with portraits, historical documents, and quotations, the book is an album of female strength in times of crises and hardship.
