Gertrud / Gertrud
Novel
Situated beneath the official histories and miles away from familiar family novels, in the detail-drenched, idiosyncratically revealing monologue of his mother, Einar Schleef tells the story of a family that is ruled by female figures who all possess Gertrud’s strength. The first son flees to the West in 1957, the second 20 years later, the father dies somewhere in the middle. Her focus is directed squarely on survival. A German history about a present that lives from the past.
