Choirs are immensely popular, In Germany alone, there are 60,000 amateur choirs, and this figure is growing every year. Anyone who sings in a choir knows the reason why. Singing creates feelings of happiness, it is like a natural anti-depressant, reduces stress, extends life expectancy. Singing in a choir fosters a sense of community – and a love of music. When we sing, we are one with out bodies. But what is so unique about singing in a choir? With the energy of a curious narrator, Stefan Moster explores the world of choirs in this informative and entertaining book.

From professional choirs down to the smallest amateur choir way out in the most far-flung village. From devotional men’s choirs to spirited queer vocal ensembles. From the oratorios to serenades. Stefan Moster, who grew up »in a family in which it was impossible to escape singing in a choir«, looks into all facets of this choral cosmos. And makes some surprising discoveries – both historical and contemporary.

Whether it’s Stefan Moster’s grandfather receiving a serenade from 100 singers on his birthday, the Red Army Choir swaying casually on a Dutch late night show, the fans in a football stadium singing in praise of their team, or Arvo Pärt politicising choir songs - singing moves us deeply.
