At the beginning of the 21st century the world’s religions are facing radical transformations. They exist simultaneously alongside one another and all the other cultural creations and symbols, and if extracted from their temporal and spatial context, are open for general use, for fundamentalist or individual appropriation.
Globalization not only offers an opportunity for the world religions to extricate themselves from territorial trammels and rediscover and reanimate their transnational dimensions, networks and notions of »community«. At the same time, in this way claims to a monopoly are also cast into doubt. The world’s religions see themselves forced to compete and communicate with one another in the public domain shaped by the mass media. The post-secular age must seek to overcome the dispute between religions and secularisms as to which is modern in favor of a civil world society that obliges populations of different faiths to tread a “common path”. What is the position of the individual, of the Jews, Christians, Muslims and atheists on the »spirit« of cosmopolitanism?
