We are delighted that Anna Kim and Robert Menasse have been chosen for the shortlist of the Austrian Book Prize 2022.
Anna Kim has been nominated with her novel Story of a Child, about which the jury states: »The novel makes visible how the fallacy of inferring belonging and identity from external characteristics [...] plays out still in contemporary society. The author succeeds not only in treating a topical subject with historical depth, but also in putting it into a convincing narrative form.«
Robert Menasse's latest novel, the sequel to the bestselling, widely translated The Capital, has also been selected for the shortlist. According to the jury, »Enlargement is [Menasse's] rousing second novel about the oh-so-boring EU. Rousing because Robert Menasse tells a European love story, within which he unfolds an absurd crime story and presents all kinds of shrewd political personnel. After reading this novel, no one can claim that the EU has no face«.
This year, the Austrian Book Prize will be awarded for the seventh time. It is organised by the Austrian Ministry of the Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport, the Austrian Publishers and Booksellers Association and the Vienna Chamber of Labour. Its aim is »to honour the quality and independence of Austrian literature and to give it the attention it deserves throughout the German-speaking world.« The award is given to the best German-language work of fiction, essay, poetry or drama by an Austrian author.
The award ceremony will be held on November 21 in Vienna. The Austrian Book Prize is endowed with € 20,000.
