Maja Haderlap und Clemens J. Setz have made the shortlist for the Austrian Book Prize for their novels
Women at Night and
Moons before Landing, with both authors making it to the final five. The 2023 Prize is jointly administered by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service, and Sport, the Hauptverband des Österreichischen Buchhandels, and the Arbeiterkammer Wien.
In their press release, the judges had the following to say about Maja Haderlaps
Women at Night: “Maja Haderlap virtuosically weaves the biographies of these women into a masterful work of literature that navigates traumatic childhood experiences, unresolved conflicts, and Catholic dogma.
Women at Night is a deeply moving novel of great poetic force."
On Clemens J. Setz’s novel
Moons before Landing, they remarked: “The extreme cultural, historical, and linguistic sensitivity of the narrative voice never takes sides or suggests a verdict. This allows readers to find their own point of entry into the novel’s complex themes, and to experience ‘from within’ the creeping demise of a character who, despite everything, remains likeable and engaging."
The Austrian Book Prize serves to recognize the quality and independence of Austrian literature, and to raise its profile throughout German-speaking world. The winner of the Austrian Book Prize receives EUR 20,000. The awards ceremony will take place on November 6, 2023, with decision made by an independent panel of expert judges.
