On 11 November 2024, poet, essayist, author, publisher and translator Hans Magnus Enzensberger would have celebrated his 95th birthday.

Enzensberger was born in 1929 in Bavaria and passed away on 24 November 2022 in Munich. Described by the London Review of Books as »one of Germany’s leading public intellectuals«, his work has been translated into more than 20 languages. Enzensberger published his first volume of poetry, Verteidigung der Wölfe, in 1957, and became a member of the legendary Gruppe 47, which sought to rebuild German culture in the wake of the Second World War.

Hans Magnus Enzensberger received numerous national and international awards for his various literary activities, including Germany’s most prestigious literary accolade, the Georg Büchner Prize in 1963, the Heinrich Böll Prize in 1985, the Premio d’Annunzio in 2006, the Sonningprisen in 2010, and the Frank Schirrmacher Prize in 2015.

In 2020, Suhrkamp published Enzensberger’s Poems 1950–2020, providing a comprehensive survey of his poetic oeuvre.
