Shortly after his wedding Storm met Dorothea Jensen, with whom he had a passionate relationship and who would become his second wife. Due to political reasons, he was removed from his position in 1852, after which he worked as an unpaid assessor in Potsdam. He met Franz Kugler, Theodor Fontane, Joseph von Eichendorff and Paul Heyse. He began working as a judge in Heiligenstadt in 1856 and became a district magistrate in Husum in 1864. Storm is considered one of the most important representatives of German literary realism. His fame is due to his poems and his novellas in particular.
