Stanislav Perfecki, a hero of the Ukrainian underground, poet and performance artist, has been invited to an international symposium in Venice on the post-carnevalistic madness of the world. On his way to La Serenissima he gets waylaid by some decadent Munich bohemians, falls in love with the woman someone has sent to spy on him, and becomes tangled up in diabolical intrigues and erotic excesses.Perfecki’s trail goes cold at the open window of his hotel on the Canal Grande. Is it possible that this master of masks, forgeries, contortions and other »perversions« has merely staged his own disappearance? One thing is certain: like in Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, the clear precursor to Andrukhovych’s novel, everyday reality is swept aside as the supernatural takes control.
