17 October 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of Ingeborg Bachmann's death.

Bachmann was born in Klagenfurt on 25 June 1926 and is considered one of the most important German-language poets and writers of the 20th century. She studied philosophy, psychology and German literature in Innsbruck, Graz and Vienna. She worked in radio before turning her hand to poetry and prose. 

In 1952, she gave her first reading to the famous Gruppe 47, which helped her to gain a profile as a poet. For her first volume of poetry, Deferred Time, she received the Gruppe 47 Literature Prize in 1953. In addition to her second volume of poetry, Invocation of Ursa Major (1956), Bachmann wrote essays and short stories. She was awarded numerous prizes, including the Georg Büchner Prize in 1964. Malina, Bachmann’s only completed novel, appeared in 1971.

Ingeborg Bachmann died in Rome on October 17, 1973.

Ingeborg Bachmann was born on June 25, 1926 in Klagenfurt. She first rose to prominence as a poet after reading her work at a gathering of the legendary Gruppe 47. She went on to publish two collections of poetry, Die gestundete Zeit (1953) and Anrufung des Großen Bären (1956), along with numerous radio plays, essays, and short story collections. In 1971, she published her only completed novel, Malina. Bachmann passed away on 17 October 1973 in Rome.
