Jacob Grimm

Jacob Grimm, born in Hanau in 1785 and died in Berlin in 1863, studied law in Marburg. During this time, he discovered his interest in the historical development of language and literature. Later he studied Old German poetry and language as well as Slavic studies and worked as a librarian. His literary life’s work is closely linked to that of his younger brother Jacob Grimm. Together they worked on a major project: a German dictionary that would hold the entire Modern High German vocabulary.
