»Carelessly falling into the indifferent sough of reality.«

The great Hans Magnus Enzensberger’s new volume of poetry

With images by Jan Peter Tripp

About

Babel! A word seemingly born from chaos in its alliterating, rolling urgency. The poet pulls several examples of how deception and self-deceit, misjudgements and failing routines determine everyday life out of the hat, amused, cryptic and sad.

If it were just these observations – very suitable for many a poem. But if we are talking about decrepitude as a form of existence, a dance on a high wire above bottomless abysses, then it’s all or nothing – it’s about »keeping metaphysics on the simmer« and about looking the final »fall of all falls« in the eye ourselves. Blessed is he who winks at the Last Judgement even in that type of situation and who has a cool answer to the last of all questions: »To what end?«

Just as they have done for Blauwärts (2013), three experts pick up pen, paint and scissors once more: Hans Magnus Enzensberger’s poems are united with images by Jan Peter Tripp in Justine Landat’s design to form a joint excursion through melancholically illuminated zones of menace, failure and (artistic) success.

Praise

»one of Germany’s leading public intellectuals.« London Review of Books

»Even at the age of ninety Hans Magnus Enzensberger stays agile.« Helmut Böttiger, Süddeutsche Zeitung

»Readers and the world are berated cheerfully and feistily. […] There is a melancholic- buoyant mood of farewell. A man in front of the Last Judgement.« Volker Weidermann, Der Spiegel

»The poet, who threw himself into the fray of global political affairs as more of an essayist, with lucid essays, provocative comments and controversial contributions to the debates, never lost sight of the fine-tuning and the elegance of language. […] Babel – a volume that finally manages to capture the spirit of the times and gives the quiet conclusion of a turbulent time of Sturm und Drang a wink.« Claudia Christophersen, NDR

»The poet Enzensberger, meanwhile, is still merry. Slowness and armour don’t suit him. Instead, he creates cheerful Babel – an enjoyable chaos.« Björn Hayer, Berliner Zeitung

»What Hans Magnus Enzensberger, who celebrated his 90th birthday this past November, brought top aper hier with casual elegance, wit as sharp as a samurai sword and sutting (self-)irony is impossible to emulate. What a blast ...« Michael Augustin, Lesart

»A much as these new poems interrogate evanescence – Enzensberger remains an effortlessly attentive resident of this mortal world.« Michael Schreiner, Augsburger Allgemeine

»What must not be forgotten to mention are the surreal, photo-realistic paintings by Jan Peter Tripp that not only illustrate this book but in their mysteriousness form an appealing contrast to the vibrant clarity of the poems.« Alexander Altmann, Landshuter Zeitung

»poetically condensed ideas and witty notes about the transience of existence and the futility of all action« Steffen Radlmaier, Nürnberger Nachrichten
