Hamburg, a foggy March, dead strippers lie next to the the Elbe. Who is responsible for the young women’s deaths? Why were they scalped? What's with the wigs? State prosecutor Chastity Riley handles crimes committed in and around Hamburg’s red light district – though she is more interested in the red light than in the crime. But: Her strength is thinking like a criminal. Her weakness is pubs, cigarettes, young men and dim lights. She comes across cooler than she is in her boots and trench coat, tough on the outside, delicate on the inside, sometimes just a mess of empathy – if Philip Marlowe had a granddaughter, maybe this would be her. And now Riley has to walk through a long, grey tunnel that is becoming darker and darker by the minute.

A somewhat shady team of policemen, prosecutor Riley and small-time gangsters stagger through the neighbourhood and the Hamburg weather. Their search for love and themselves usually ends in a dead end. So it may not be a bad thing that a series of murders puts them back on track – albeit a bloody one.
